On Monday 10th March 2014, the Department will hold its 11th Annual PhD Conference. The conference celebrates the work of all of our PhD students through presentations and posters, recognising their valuable contribution to computer science research. Two keynote speakers will present motivational talks during the event.

Important Dates

The purpose of the conference is to give students an opportunity to experience a conference environment as well as providing a showcase of the current research being performed in the Department.

Monday 20th January 2014: Paper and poster submission for peer review

Monday 10th February 2014: Acceptance notification and feedback to authors

Monday 24th February 2014 : Final submission of revised paper and printed poster.

Papers

All students are welcome to submit a paper to the conference. If you submit a paper you are not expected to also submit a poster.

Even though students can submit a paper that has already been published or submitted at a different conference, it is highly encouraged that the paper submitted to the PhD conference contains original content that hasn’t been published yet. The papers should abide by any recognized format (e.g. IEEE, LNCS). They must be at least 4 pages and should not exceed 9 pages in length.

New option to paper submission:

Since the first computing conference over 10 years ago the department changed a lot, especially in size. To keep abreast of changes in the department changes to the conference organisation are necessary.
Due to the diverse research topics of our PhDs in-depth understanding of all areas is impossible. Therefore after many new suggestions from our researchers to improve the idea of our CompConf we (PhD-Reps and PhD Director) decided to make the following changes:

We believe, that we could make the conference more interesting for everyone (also for our guests from the industry), if the second year researchers would submit a (power point or LaTeX-beamer) presentation (instead of a paper) which would provide a general overview (not just a special problem) of their research. This presentation could be prepared in groups of researchers from the same research topic, research group or the same supervisor. But you are also free to prepare a single presentation. All presentation should be not longer than 20-25 minutes. We also think that the presentations could be more representative, if the senior (3rd and 4th year) researchers would motivate the presentations of their colleagues by a short introduction about their general research results. The presentations will also be reviewed by the academic staff of our department and the students will receive feedback with helpful comments from reviewers.

The author(s) of each paper (project) must give an oral presentation, which will be judged by an invited panel of experts. A prize will be awarded for the best presentation.

Posters

The poster presentation segment is compulsory for all first year PhD students (entry prior to January 2014). All MSc and PhD students in other years are also welcome to present a poster. You are free to register a poster that has already been presented elsewhere.

Each poster will also be peer reviewed and judged by a panel of experts. A prize will be awarded for the best poster. Furthermore, the winning posters will be on display for a definite time within the Department of Computing.
Please submit your paper/poster through the EasyChair™ system by the previously mentioned deadline.
